Link building or the practise of buildings links is more commonly known as ‘Offpage’ SEO (search engine optimization). To be absolutely sure you understand what I am talking about. A backlink is a link from another website pointing to you website. i.e. If I have a Facebook profile and put a link in my profile to my website that is a backlink.

Understand that link building is very, very important. You can spend a lot of time and effort creating the most perfect search engine friendly website but if you don’t have links pointing back to your site then you are going to have a hard time ranking well. If you decide to learn nothing else about SEO then, please at least take this away –

Link building or getting backlinks to your website is the very essence of SEO (search engine optimisation).

You must get backlinks in order to Rank well on the search engines!

If you don’t believe me take Google’s word for it. In its webmaster guidelines, Google explicitly states that the position of where your website ranks is to some degree related to the quality and quantity of links that you have pointing back to your site. According to Google’s webmaster guidelines,

“Your site’s ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity”

So you don’t need to pay an SEO ‘expert’ to tell you about how to get up the rankings because Google are already spelling it for you!

Think of links like votes. Search engines have to have some way of measuring the importance of a website. If they see lots of sites, especially high quality ones linking back to a website they assume that that website must be trustworthy. The more links that you have pointing back to your site, the more votes you have and the higher you will rank. Which political party wins the election? The one with the most votes (well usually, assuming a democratic country and even then that’s not guaranteed!). Therefore it is absolutely critical that you work on getting as many backlinks to your website as possible.

So how do I get links back to my website?

The short and long answer is quality content. Google tells us that if we want to get backlinks then we need to produce quality content. This is taken directly from Google webmaster guidelines.

“The best way to get other sites to create relevant links to yours is to create unique, relevant content that can quickly gain popularity in the Internet community. The more useful content you have, the greater the chances someone else will find that content valuable to their readers and link to it. Before making any single decision, you should ask yourself the question: Is this going to be beneficial for my page’s visitors?”

If we produce quality content then other websites will want to link back to us naturally. And that makes sense, right? I’m sure you have experienced this. For example when I read a particularly interesting blog post, I might share a link to that blog on a forum or I might bookmark it at one of the social media sites such as Digg or Mixx.

The more quality content a site produces the more links it gets and the higher it ranks. If you get enough links from a sufficient number of really trusted and authoritative websites, then your site will naturally grow in trust and authority. This is known as natural link growth or natural link velocity.

We can therefore conclude that if we want to rank high in the search engines, we just need to create a seo friendly website and create content that is so interesting,people will link to us naturally.

There’s just one problem.

Creating quality content and encouraging natural linking can take a massive amount of time and effort. Of course I would always encourage people to create sites with quality content. However If you are intending on using SEO to drive traffic to your website (and you should be) and want to make money sooner rather later you are going to have to start building links yourself. Really link building is the most important activity to start any SEO campaign. If you want to rank quickly then you must build your own links. If you put in the time and effort to build links, then you will be picked up by the search engines and you will be rewarded by higher rankings. Higher rankings equal more money (assuming your product or offer is relevant to the searcher).
So now you know that you need to build links here are some tips on where you can build links from.
REMEMBER LINK BUILDING CAN'T BE DONE BY SOME AUTOMATED SOFTWARE, You can only be assissted by these programs. Search engines frequently change the way the search the internet in order to find and overcome these softwares ( To prevent SPAMMING and provide quality searches for you.) So in order to put your online business or any website on autopilot you have to spend some time setting it up first.
Enough of that, back to how to rank well...

1. Article Directories

Article directories are a good place to get backlinks from and can drive a lot of targeted to your website. Furthermore the articles themselves can get picked up by the search engines. However I would always suggest ‘spinning’ your articles, so that each article your submit appears to be unique content. As I understand unique content from different ip addresses, has more seo value than links from duplicate content.

There are many sites that allow you to submit a press release for free and also allow you to include a backlink in the press release. Also press releases can get picked up by search engines, so can help to drive extra traffic to your website. You never know write something really newsworthy and could find yourself being talked about in national newspapers or radio stations.

3. Social Media Sites

There are hundreds of different social media sites and they can all help to build backlinks and drive traffic. If you manage to get on the front pages of Digg then you could potentially drives tens of thousands of visitors to your website. I think you might know many but the most popular ones are

Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, LinkedIn etc...

4. Forums

These are great places to interact with other people and build backlinks. Although you must check the forum rules before posting links, as some have strict rules on posting links to stop spammers.

5. Blogs

It easy to find blogs that is relevant to your niche and post comments on them. You’ll get a nice backlink and may drive some traffic to your website. Just make sure that your comment looks as if you have actually read the post. It is infuriating to blog owners to have constantly monitor and delete spam comments. Also try to find blogs that allow that allow do-follow comments (I’ll do another lesson on this but do follow means that link juice will be passed to you).

6. Directory Submissions

There is some debate as to the SEO value of directories as many people argue that the search engines see directories as nothing more than glorified link farms. However I personally don’t believe that it can do much harm and may even help you drive some traffic. Just be aware of scams promising huge amounts of directory submissions.

7. Local Business Directories

You can list your website on many local business directories which can help to get drive some traffic to your site.

8. Friends Websites

If your friends that have websites, why not ask them to put a link on their site back to yours? If they are your friends then they’ll want to help you out.

9. Offer content in exchange for links

You can offer webmasters content in exchange for giving you a backlink. Webmasters are always looking for fresh content and if you are a good writer then many will be happy to accept your content in exchange for a link.

Final word on effective link building tips.

There are 9 link building methods that you can implement right away. However I just want to mention that when you are building links you should always try to get do-follow links from highly trusted, highly relevant websites. Backlinks from websites with a high page rank (the higher the page rank, the more trusted and authoritative the site is seen in Google’s) that are relevant to your niche carry a lot of SEO value. If you don’t believe me, why not take Google’s word for it. According to Google’s webmaster guidelines,

“It is not only the number of links you have pointing to your site that matters, but also the quality and relevance of those links”.

Furthermore you should try and get a link within the actual text of the page. These are known as contextual backlinks (I’ll do another lesson on them). If you concentrate on getting contextual backlinks from highly trusted, highly relevant websites then you will get a lot of SEO value and you will be able to rank well.

Now, I’m not saying that this isn’t hard work because it is. If yoru product content that is interesting and compelling enough then overtime highly relevant, authoritative sites will link back to you. But as I mentioned this can take some effort and time and you want to start ranking soon, so you can make money. So the alternative is to build links yourself or outsource the link building to someone else.

I find it amusing when people follow me on Twitter, they’d expect me to follow them back! And when they find out that I don’t follow back, very soon they’ll un-follow me. Please understand that Twitter is a social media site. If I find nothing in common with you, why must I follow you back and get ’social’ with you? Oh please…. follow back is not an obligation.

I vet my followers manually. And if I don’t follow you back, here are some reasons:

1) Your bio is a complete blank. There’s nothing about you, about what you do and where you’re from. Worse still, your profile picture is the default Twitter one-small-and-one-big-circle avatar!

2) Your web bio is a link to an affliate site, some get rick quick scheme or pornographic site.

3) You precede or follow every one of your tweets with a link to your own site.

4) You consistently use vulgarity or foul language.

5) You have thousands of followers and followings and yet less than a hundred tweets. It’s a dead giveaway that you’re using some bots to boost your follower’s count (a.k.a your ego).

6) You joined Twitter for less than a month and yet have thousands of followers and followings. Another dead giveaway that your bot is in action!

7) Your name is of complete opposite gender from your profile picture. Duh?

8) We have nothing in common. So why bother?

I repeat. Twitter is a social media site. Not a place for people to flaunt their followers count. I’m not impressed with numbers. I’d rather follow someone who only has 50 followers and yet is an engaging Tweep than someone who has tens of thousands of followers but do nothing more than just tweeting power quotes or RT-ing other Tweeps. Remember the ’social’ in social media sites!

If you are trying to increase traffic for your website (aren’t we all), then you need to focus on what people will be searching for, and get listed in the top 10 results for those search terms. If you are targeting certain keywords (in lieu of a company name), then use this method with keywords instead of a company name.

First a bit of help for those new to the process. Google likes old websites and websites that are considered authoritative to link to your website. This method will help you get a few good links on old websites and authority websites.

Keep in mind the following:

What you write doesn’t really matter, you just want the link.

Write something different for every site, don’t copy and paste.

Use all 10 tips, and then find 3 more of your own.

Here are 10 tips to get you to the top of the search engines for your company name. These are listed in order of effectiveness.

For some proof, here is my company name (AfterHim Media, not competitive at all) listed at the top of Google, Yahoo!, and MSN Live forAfterHim Media.

1. Get a targeted domain

YourExampleKeywords.com is going to have a difficult time ranking for a company website, unless there is no competition. A better corporate domain is YourCompanyName.com that links to YourExampleKeywords.com. This approach will help get you ranked for your company, then you can link to your keyword site.

2. Establish your About Us page

Your “About Us” page should be linked from every page on your company website. Some people like to use a sub domain (about.example.com) but I prefer just a straight page (example.com/about.html). Either way, make sure this page has company executives, biographies, company name, address, and contact information. Optional for this page is a media kit, advertising information, promotions, company history, refund information, corporate credit rating, etc. Those “optionals” could be on there own page if you would rather. My About Us page is incomplete right now, and just has a short biography about the company.

3. Create a Squidoo Lens (Create Squidoo Account)
Squidoo is a website that allows users to create mini websites (called a “lens”). This lens allows you to post company information, links, biographies, pictures, guest book entries, etc. We’re only concerned about the links. Put some information about your company, and link to your company website using in-content links on both the main page, and the about you part of Squidoo. If you notice, Google lists Squidoo as the second result behind my company name.

4. Create a Google Page (Create a Google Page)

Google Pages are Google’s way of offering small website with an easy to user interface designed by novice website creators and spammed by experienced website creators. Whichever side you are on, you should have a Google Page with a link to your company website. It is extremely easy to do, the templates populate automatically, and all you do is hit “Publish”.

5. Create a Wordpress blog (Create a Wordpress Blog)

Wordpress blogs, like Blogger blogs are easy to use, simple to set up, and have a great interface. You don’t need to know anything more than how to click in a box and type some information about your company. After you’ve done that, click submit and you’re blog is there. Simple and easy, just how I like it.

6. Create a Blogger Blog (Create a Blogger Blog)

Blogger (blogspot), like Google Pages, is an easy to use blog creator. Blogger is hosted by Google so you don’t have to host the blog on your domain, nor do you have to have any website knowledge. Just create the blog, click “Write Post” then “Publish”. Your blog is on the web, Blogger now links to your domain, and you’re ready to rock! Did I mention it’s free and only takes about 8 minutes from start to finish?

7. Create a Newsvine account (Create a Newsvine)

Newsvine is a news site written by users. You can create a Newsvine account then create your own “Vine“. This is usually a subdomain with your company name. You can then write a small tidbit of info about your company and link to your site. Simple, free and easy.

8. Wikipedia Entry (Create Wikipedia account)

The smallest entry that I was able to find was one for Shawn Hogan, owner of DigitalPoint.com. His entry is basically about being sued by the MPAA, but shows how you can have a small entry for your company. Make sure you check this information frequently because other people can come through and spam and blast your entry. Once you’re signed in, you can click the “Edit” button to edit an entry. You can also create a new entry by searching (left menu) for your company name. If nothing comes up, click where it says, “Create This Page”. Wikipedia isn’t an easy system to use and you’re company might not get listed after you create the page. I’ve not had success with Wikipedia.

9. Create a MySpace account (Create a MySpace)

Honestly I’ve never created a MySpace account. Not a personal account, not a spammy account, nothing. I’ve never really even browsed the site. However, I know thousands have been made (and were made) by spamming MySpace using bulletins and new accounts. Now is the time to create a legitimate account, with your company name and link to your company site. You’re not trying to create a huge MySpace influence, just get the link and get out. If you don’t, you’ll get sucked in and you’ll feel you need to have MySpace friends. Trust me, you don’t need them.

10. Use a Windows Live Space (Create Windows Live Space)

I don’t have a Windows Live Space. I kept getting a page that told me someone was logged in with my email address. I cleared my cookies, tried a new email address, but still someone was signed in. I tried to use the “Logout” button but that didn’t work. I assume that Windows Live Spaces are similar to the other tips posted above. It is number 10 because currently it does nothing but frustrate me. Hopefully you have better luck.

1. Set up your profile

9. Integrate Twitter with other social networks
Have a blog? Then post to Twitter when you have a post that will interest your niche. Have a Facebook profile? Then ask people to add you. Twitter is really a vital part of web 2.0. It can serve as the core. It can let you build relationships that can branch out to other social networks.

10. Establish relationships even outside Twitter
Have a lot of friends on Twitter? Then take it to another level. Ask for their messenger and talk to these people on a more intimate level. Call them through Skype or even arrange a meet-up. Twitter can create real relationships.
